SIRAT : The Forgotten Iban Attire

The Sirat or Loincloths was once of the most basic markers of cultural identity, is now distinctively ignored among modern Ibans. Even the so called expert such as the anthropologists give a word or two regarding it, then pass on to other matters. The writers on customs seems to forgot the topics altogether.

For as the Dutchman Karl Martin said of the Sulawesi loincloth a hundred years ago, “once it’s on it’s hard to figure out how it got that way.” Some may thinks, a paper on the loincloth ought to be brief and cover only the essentials. Yet just as we wear clothes for more reasons than mere utility, and dress decorates as much as it hides, the subject of the loincloth furnishes an occasion for remarks on history, culture, and psychology.

The reasons why it did not attracts any attention of the scholar, though the purpose of the loincloth is to cover the male genitals, it leaves the buttocks bare. Most peoples feel shame about all or part of the genitals; but it seems to be a peculiarly western trait to feel equal shame about the buttocks, probably from a fear of homosexuality, an anxiety which also seems to grow with civilization. Hence, westerners have always considered the loincloth an immodest garment.

The loincloth is a garment of great antiquity, the original men’s clothing of most of the world, and particularly of the Malayo-Polynesian area, which includes the islands of the Pacific Ocean as far east as Hawaii and as far south as New Zealand, the Malay Archipelago and the Philippines, the Malay peninsula, the island of Madagascar to the west, and mainland places inhabited by such Dayak-like peoples as the Mnongs of Vietnam, the Mru of Bangladesh and the Nagas of Assam. On the continent west of India the loincloth is unknown.

In Malaya, Java, Bali, and elsewhere, the loincloth was replaced by the skirtlike kain because of Hindu influence, while the sarong (a sewn tube of cloth) is an Islamic import. It is worth noting that in the Balinese wayang kulit, the most venerable character, Twalen, wears a loincloth and not a skirt. Twalen is both a funny rustic servant and one of the highest of gods, and it has been suggested that his character represents the pre-Hindu and animist “native” nature of the Balinese.

HOW TO USE SIRAT

Take a strip of material about 10 inches wide and 10 to 12 feet long. Hold up one end in front with your left hand or chin. The distance it falls determines the length of the apron. Pass the rest of the material between your legs to the back and bring it up from back to front, from right to left around your waist (the other way if lefthanded). Wind it around your waist, and then, when you reach again to the back, double the material over and pass it under the cloth that comes between your legs, and pull on the loop thus formed until belt and pouch are sufficiently tight. There should be a little “tail” [iko sirat in Iban] in the back. The loincloth wound this way is quite secure and will not fall off even on a hard trek through the jungle.

Simple enough. But as dress is an important medium for individuals as well as whole peoples to express their individual styles, the loincloth too has many variants which we must consider. The standard Borneo loincloth goes at least twice around the waist, and usually more, and the apron and tail will hang at least two thirds of the way down the thighs. The Borneo fashion is to cover a broad band of waist, including the navel, although in the past, men often liked to squeeze the cloth of the pouch and apron very narrow. While in the midst of some chore in which the apron and tail might be dirtied or caught, a man can tuck them into the waistband.

Although Dayaks have been trading with other countries for thousands of years, barkcloth was certainly the original material for loincloths, as it was in Hawaii. Barkcloth was worn quite often in later times, even in the middle of this century, when trade stopped during World War 2 and nobody whether in Kuching or in the ulu could buy cloth. The poor Sebuyau of Lundu, who had by that time abandoned the sirat, were forced to make barkcloth shorts.

This ancient barkcloth loincloth must have been elegant. Dayaks preferred bark from the ipoh tree for its whiteness and softness, and often gave it a damasked texture by beating it with a carved mallet. One example is on display at the Sarawak Museum. There is a limit to how long a strip of barkcloth can be made. The longest will go only about twice around the waist. Usually the Borneo loincloth is made of a piece of commercial cloth and longer than the minimum twelve feet, often eight to ten yards of cloth and more. Early Brooke officials frowned on this “extravagant waste.” The common daily style was to wind the loincloth of a single long length off the bolt, folded in half lengthwise and not cut. Thus it would be about 18 inches wide.

Dayaks preferred to use cloth dyed in some color, especially dark blue, or bright red (kesumba , an assertive color), or black. A cheap cotton such as is still sold in Kuching was acceptable, but one hears even of silk loincloths. Photographs taken by Charles Hose around a hundred years ago show orang ulu men wearing loincloths of white cotton, which seems to have been the fashion in those days. Many photographs from the beginning of this century as well as the 40s and 50s show Dayak men wearing loincloths of cotton printed in a calico or large flowered pattern. Its an old authentic fashion.

It is very hard to see old examples of sirat woven in the ikat technique peculiar to the Ibans, though recent ikat loincloths exist from eastern Indonesian islands. It would be natural to suppose that Iban women did weave them for their men, and there is evidence in the following passage of an ensera. Keling comes on a night visit to court Kumang [ngayap] and, as he gets up to leave, not yet having assurance of her love, she takes the tail of his loincloth in her hand. This must have been a very splendid sirat, since it was the custom for young men to dress carefully and stylishly for a courting visit.

Ninga jako orang ka indu munyi nya dia Keling lalu angkat beguai pulai. Sepi iya tak tekait iko sirat. Digama iya tak besabong sama jari.

“Nama main nuan megai iko sirat aku deh unggal? Enti nuan deka neladan iya tau ga unggal,” pia ko Keling.

“Enda ga unggal. Ukai aku deka neladan tanda sirat nuan. Aku enda kala neladan japai jamah orang,” pia ko Kumang.

Keling asks: Do you want to copy the designs on the front and tail of my loincloth? As the great art of Iban women is the design and execution of ikat weavings, and since Kumang is in mythology the very greatest weaver, Keling here ironically supposes that Kumang wants to examine the ikat design of the ends [tanda ] of his sirat.

These tanda are the most important part of the sirat, as they are that which shows, the body of the sirat being hidden under its coils. Women often weave only these decorated ends and stitch them later to a strip of commercial cloth.

There is also seen sirats made out of a body of white commercial drill cloth, with separate pieces stitched to the ends. These tanda are thickly embroidered with colored thread, in a style of design I have seen neither on mats nor on pua or other weavings, but most resembling mat designs. The hems of these tanda sirat are decorated with tassels of yarn and little pompoms. They also are about 10 inches wide and long enough to pass only twice or three times around the body.

The fashion of the recent present among all Dayak peoples is to wear a loincloth of red, black or dark blue commercial cotton with one broad bar of white, then a bar of color contrasting with the color of the sirat’s body, then another bar of white sewn to the apron and tail portions. Dayaks seem to have invented this design in imitation of hornbill feathers. Other loincloths have tanda decorated with appliques of commercial fringe, or, among the orang ulu , with tanda painted in their special own tendril-like designs or with beaded portions.

These modern sirats are very long indeed, and are often wound to cover the middle body completely from the top of the thighs to above the navel. Pictures show that men need help getting into these loincloths. Sometimes excess cloth that passes from under the bunch between the legs is arranged in two huge billowing loops. These can be seen in photographs of Gawai festivals.

That the fashion of wearing a long sirat that covers much of the body is an old one we have the evidence of a phrase in an historical tale of the time just before the Brooke era: Sirat seduai nyampai di kerigai rusok marang —”The sirats of the two of them reached to their ribs, turning around both sides.”

While working or travelling, especially if one is an older man and does not feel obliged to be fashionable, one can wear a sirat sabelit , a “once-wound loincloth,” as the Ibans call it: “a work sirat, i.e. once round waist and apron just enough for decency.”

IMPORTANT BUT NOT URGENT - Motion on children of mixed parentage rejected

A motion proposed by Ngemah assemblyman Gabriel Adit on the Bumiputera status of children from a mixed marriage was rejected in the DUN yesterday. DUN speaker Dato Sri Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar rejected the motion on the grounds that it was “IMPORTANT BUT NOT URGENT”.

So funny! Instead of saying “Not important and Not urgent”, the Wiseman use a word of wisdom, which is the government concerned about this problem because it is important, however, it is not too urgent to be discuss now. Maybe in next DUN sitting, for a time being, let’s focus on the urgent matter first.

Okay, such as? A new Astana, maybe? New car? Or..err..what about zoo, or maybe a circus centre in Kuching? With plenty of clowns we have here, I’m sure it will generate a good income to Sarawak.

In the DUN sitting, Adit’s motion was read as “children born of mixed parentage especially between a Bumiputera father and Non-Bumiputera mother to be automatically recognized as a Bumiputera.

But the man of the August house said, No! Other than the matter is not urgent, the motion is also irregular as it is contrary to the existing provision of the federal constitution. The motion did not satisfy the prerequisite stipulated in Standing Order 51. So, he just follows the law, okay?

After the stupid problem rose in the case of Marina Undau, especially after 46 years Sarawak formed Malaysia, there had been a lot of interest and concern shown by Sarawakians who suddenly realised that they are not Bumiputera.

In this context, Bumiputera has always been a “Bumiputera”. Not for the past 46 years, but for the present and I hope it will not for the years after.

In the past two weeks, some politician in Sarawak has bed been urging the state government to seek an amendment to Article 161A of the federal constitution after a student of mixed parentage was rejected from entering the matriculation programme on the basis that she is not a Bumiputera based on Article 161A, though her father is an Iban, an original son of soil of Sarawak.

One of the Dayak leaders, Datuk Joseph Salang had written to the Deputy Prime Minister on that matter. And a day later, supreme leader of Dayak, Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu claimed that he has written to the Prime Minister on the same matter.

I don’t know, but it doesn’t seems quite right for me, after the subordinate wrote a letter to a 2nd man of the country, a supreme mater comes forward and claimed that he had written a letter to the 1st man of Malaysia. Sound good, but quite fishy.

As the 1st leader of Dayak he are, he must one step beyond the others, if the subordinate had written to the 2nd man on the ground of DPM is an Education Minister, and he later then to the PM. On the basis of what? 1Malaysia? Or with the intention of got the Article 161A amended? In this case, I think Majlis Raja-Raja or the Council of the Head of the State would be the best target of all.

From one perspective, for me, these somehow look like a struggle of our leader in gaining popularity. However, I hope its no true. Anyway, the time will tell.

Again, back to the rejection of DUN regarding the motion, Important but Not Urgent somehow reflected how well the government “In Touch With People” as claimed by the Prime Minister few days ago. A recipe of the great success of BN to be the longest party rules the state, in the world!

And again, I wonder. If the case like that, which has prompted a lot of public interest, is not considered as urgent, what will?

The clock ticking… the timing bomb somehow, someday, may explode.

Penan tinggal salah sapa?

Kebuah aku nulis blog post ke bekait enggau bansa penan ke saritu laban aku tekilan meda berita TV3 delaman. TV3 bisi mansut ke berita entang bansa penan ti kurang penemu dalam aspek "rogol" laban ko sida TV3, sex nya kira ke pekara biasa ngagai suku bansa sida tu, lalu ketegal nya tadi, mayuh bala penan ngandung sereta ngada ke anak maia umur ke agi biak, sereta mega mayuh ke nyadi "Ibu Tunggal", bala anak enda nemu sapa apai sida.

Genteran ke chukup narit ati aku, maia sida ke madah ke bala Penan mayuh enda nemu utai ke bakatu laban sida nadai sekula. Bisi sekeda sekula sampai sekolah rendah aja, udah nya enda sekula agi laban ke sekolah menengah balat jauh ari menua sida, sampai bisi sekeda nyau tesat dalam kampung tegal ke ka nurun ke sekula. Sida mega bejaku madah ke bala nembiak penan patut ia diberi peluang ngambi ke ulih belajar ngagai sekula tinggi, ngubah sereta ngemanah ke agi pendiau pengidup sida ia.

Sigi agi utai ke nyadi penanggur ngagai bala sida Penan, ti ngasuh bala anak sida nadai entu ati ka sekula ketegal jalai. Enti nyau begenggam semengat merau niti ai wong, bala kitai engka lembau meh ka mindah.

PM kitai, Datuk Seri Najib, bisi mansut ke genteran BN tu "Juara Rakyat" maia ke bejaku ba Sabah apin lama ke udah. Dia ia bisi madah ke rahsia Barisan National ulih nyadi Parti ti paling lama bekuasa dalam dunya tu, rahsia nya nadai lebih ari nemu sereta mereti ke pemerinsa sereta utai ke dikedeka ke rakyat - In touch of People.

PM kitai bisi mega madah ke BN deka ngemaju ke semua menua pesisir dalam Sabah enggau Sarawak ngambi ke menua pesisir ditu tau sebaka enggau menua pesisir ba Semenanjung. Thumbs-up!

Ia mega bisi madah ke ia deka nubuh ke Kabinet baru ti "betanggungjawab" ngemaju ke menua pesisir Sabah enggau Sarawak. Bravo!

Tang munyi ko orang, janji orang politik tu bedau entu ulih arap 100%.

Ketegal ia ke ngena I.C sementara ngambi SPM, nadai I.C ke endar. Nya ukai salah ia, enti udah sampai dua tiga kali ngaga tang lalu apin gak tembu. Salah sapa?

A letter to Deputy Prime Minister, amend the Article 161 A

I've written to DPM to amend Article 161 A, said the Deputy Minister in Information communication and CULTURE, Datuk Joseph Salang, yesterday 3 Oct 2009. And we're thanks him (Salang) for his courage to stand up for us and we awaiting for his (DPM) reply. Hope there will be a good news soon...

The second man of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan said, its time to amend Article 161 A, as we are progressing and strived towards achieving the 1Malaysia concept, the issue of Bumiputeras and Non-Bumiputeras should no longer arise in the future, particularly in the matter of educational oppoturnities and walfare assistance.

Few days ago, share the 2nd position in Sarawak, our supreme leader Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Anak Numpang offered helps to Marina, and he will bring the matter to the higher level after he "study" the case properly.

And so was the other MPs, YBs, particularly those who has a non-native wife, voice out their comment in supporting the amendment of the particular Article. Because this problem is not a treats for Iban alone, together witl Malays, and others natives of the land of the Hornbill.

Tan Sri Jabu, our supreme Dayak leader have a right to worry, or should have worry about this problem because non of his childrens married to the Native, Rentap married a chinese, the girls married the "Cak Bareng" (caucation). Thus, non of his grandchildrens are "Native".

In case you're not so sure about the Article, here comes the info:

* Article 160 (2) of the Federal Constitution, if either parent of a candidate is a Malay who are Muslim/Orang Asli, the child is considered a Bumiputera.

* Sarawak - Article 161 A (6)(1) of the Federal Constitution, if the father and mother is a native of Sarawak, the child is considered a Bumiputera.

Which means, for Sarawak, the father and mother should be "exclusively" Bumiputera for their child to be Bumiputera.

The "Bumiputeras" in Sarawak here, comprising the Malays, Ibans, Melanaus, Bidayuhs, Bukitans, Bisayahs, Dusuns, Kadayans, Kelabits, Kayans, Kenyahs, Kajangs, Lugats, Lisums, Muruts, Penans, Punans, Sians, Tagals, Tabuns and Ukits.

According to this article, if the parents are not "exclusively" Bumiputeras, their child will not recognised as a Bumiputeras. That's happened in the case of Marina Undau, who born to Iban family as her father is an iban while her mother is a chinese, however as a Iban chinese she was, she's not a Bumiputera.

I believe the Article point to the same direction for all Natives in Sarawak, If the father is MALAY, the mother is Chinese, the child is a Malay but not considered a Bumiputera. Thus the child can't enjoy the benefits that exists for Bumiputera alone. Eventhough the race is Malay, the article 161 A says, if he married a non-Native, his child will not be a Native.

As for this reason, some of the Malay YBs who married to a non-native, speak out their voice as this is not fair to them, and so was for us.

Unfortunately, so far, we haven't heard of any comment from our State No 1, Pehin Sri. As a lawyer before, I believe he have a thousand words to say, or maybe he's waiting for a right time to come forward, conclude everything and get the Article amended.

I believe he's even more worries about this problem as Taib himself married a Non-Native (the late Datuk Patinggi Laila Taib), which made his childs Non-Natives. So according to this Article, his son, Datuk Seri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib is not a Native. This is such a big problem because I think Sarawakian want Bumiputeras to be the next Chief Minister!

As the person who come from the mix parents are not considered a Native, the sums of the member in PBB Party are voids, as the party are made exclusively for Bumiputeras. Then, PBB would not longer a backbone of BN in Sarawak.

So tell me, should or should not Taib worry about this?

Kapit datai Jalai

Pengudah ke nganti 46 taun pengelama udah Sarawak masuk Malaysia. Orang Kapit diatu tau tuchum kediri, laban malam kemari, 2 aribulan 10 taun 2009, Datuk Sri Dr James Jemut Masing madah ke kitai, Kapit deka datai jalai enda lama agi.

Jalai ke nyambung ke Kapit ngagai menua bukai dalam Sarawak tu bepun ari Kanowit ngagai Ngemah, ari Ngemah ngagai Song, lalu ari Song ngagai Kapit. Jalai tu dijangka ke tau tembu maia taun 2013 tu ila.

Orang Kapit diatu tau berengkah tuchum lantang, munyi ko sekeda, nya baru enda lebu ngundi BN ngelama tu. Nya baru enda lebu kitai masuk Malaysia, kelebih agi salah siku orang ke besangkut-paut dalam “Penubuhan Malaysia” 46 taun ke udah datai ari kapit, kitai iban ti chukup tebilang nama, Tun Datuk Patinggi Temenggong Jugah. Enti nitih ke ia, enda ibuh ngelama nya alai Kapit datai jalai, enti perintah ka jempat malas jasa Tun ke udah nyukong Sarawak tama Malaysia, enggau semua utai ke dikemisi ke Sarawak ti kaya ari semua utai, alai Semenanjung ke saritu tau maju baka ke diatu.

Taja pia, orang Kapit patut beterima kasih ngagai bala YB sida ke enda nemu leju bediri ngari ke rakyat, enda nemu malu, ngasur ke diri ngagai Kerajaan Persekutuan, minta projek jalai tu tadi, sekali enda ulih, dua, tiga, kelengah-lengah ke nganjung mua enda nemu malu, diatu Kerajaan Persekutuan udah setuju, ngagai jalai ke rakyat Malaysia ke diau ba Kapit. Taja pan lama, tang bisi gak asil.

Nyadi, ari “pengumuman” Kapit deka datai jalai taun 2013 tu ila, BN Kapit bisi bulih “credit” kena napi Pilihanraya DUN ke dijangka enda entu lama agi.
